Stephen Reeder Donaldson s-a născut în 1947, în Cleveland, Ohio. În copilărie, a petrecut 12 ani în India, unde părinții săi, misionari medicali, se ocupau de îngrijirea leproșilor. A absolvit Colegiul Wooster în 1968, apoi a lucrat într-un spitalul din Akron City între anii 1968 și 1970.
În 1971 a început să predea la Universitatea de Stat Kent, și s-a angajat ca redactor și instructor la un atelier literar. Din 1977 a început să publice The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, the Unbeliever (Cronicile lui Thomas Covenant, Necredinciosul). Cronicile au apărut sub forma a două trilogii, între 1977 și 1983, în prezent scriitorul lucrând la o tetralogie plasată în același univers.
În anul 1977, Stephen Donaldson a obținut Premiul British Fantasy pentru Lord Foul’s Bane(Blestemul nobilului Foul), iar în 1979 a primit Premiul John W. Campbell pentru cel mai bun scriitor tânăr. A mai publicat numeroase romane science-fiction și polițiste, atât sub numele său real, cât și sub pseudonimul Reed Stephens. A mai fost recompensat cu Atlanta Fantasy Fair Award (1992), pentru realizări deosebite, WIN/WIN Popular Fiction Readers Choice Award (1991) pentru autorul favorit de fantasy sau President’s Award acordat de International Association for the Fantastic in the Arts (1997).
În anul 2000 a fost onorat cu World Fantasy Award pentru cartea Reave the Just and Other Tales.
