Ian Buruma (n. 28 decembrie 1951, Haga), reputat istoric şi eseist anglo-olandez care trăieşte în Statele Unite, a studiat literatura chineză la Universitatea din Leiden şi cinematografia japoneză la Universitatea Nihon din Tokio. Scrie consistent despre cultura asiatică, îndeosebi despre cea din China şi din Japonia secolului XX. Începând din 2003, ţine cursuri de jurnalism şi drepturile omului la Bard College. Este nepotul regizorului englez de film John Schlesinger, cu care a publicat o carte de interviuri. Este considerat unul dintre cei mai importanţi intelectuali europeni contemporani. Este deţinător al Premiului Erasmus (2008) şi al Premiului Abraham Kuyper (2012). Se numără printre colaboratorii cei mai citiţi ai publicaţiilor New Yorker, New York Times şi NewYork Review of Books.
