It is the 1970s in Northern California. A farmer and his teenage daughters, Anna and Claire, work the land with the help of Coop, the enigmatic young man who lives with them. Michael Ondaatje s‑a nascut in Sri Lanka, in 1943, si s‑a mutat in Marea Britanie si apoi in Canada, unde locuieste in prezent. Si‑a facut studiile la Universitatea din Toronto si Queen’s University din Kingston, Ontario; in 1971 a devenit profesor la Universitatea York din Toronto. A publicat mai multe volume de poezii si un volum de memorii, Running in the Family (1983).
